What Is a Dietary Reference Intake?

If you've ever tried to decode a nutrition label or research a vitamin supplement, you've almost certainly run into acronyms like DRI, RDA, and AI. These terms come from the official U.S. and Canadian dietary guidance framework and are developed jointly by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) is an umbrella term. Breaking Down the Key Reference Values

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)

The RDA is the average daily intake level sufficient to meet the nutrient needs of nearly all (97–98%) healthy individuals in a particular life stage and sex group. It's the number most people think of when they hear "how much do I need?" For example, the RDA for vitamin C differs between adult men and adult women, and increases during pregnancy.

Importantly, the RDA is not a minimum floor — it already includes a margin of safety above the average requirement. If you consistently consume around the RDA for a nutrient, you're likely meeting your needs.

Adequate Intake (AI)

When there isn't enough scientific evidence to establish a firm RDA, researchers use an Adequate Intake (AI) instead. The AI is based on observed or experimentally determined intake levels in healthy populations. It's considered a reasonable target, but carries more uncertainty than the RDA. Vitamin D and certain B vitamins have historically been set as AIs while research continued to evolve.

Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)

The EAR is the intake level estimated to meet the needs of half of healthy individuals in a group. It's primarily used by nutrition researchers and public health professionals to assess population-level adequacy — not something most individuals need to apply directly to their own diet.

Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL)

The UL is the maximum daily intake unlikely to cause adverse health effects in almost all individuals. Exceeding the UL — particularly through high-dose supplements — increases the risk of toxicity. Not every nutrient has an established UL, but for those that do, staying below it matters. The UL is not a target; it's a ceiling.

How These Values Are Used — and Their Limits

DRI values are set for healthy population groups defined by age, sex, and life stage (such as pregnancy or lactation). They are not personalized prescriptions. Someone managing a chronic condition, absorbing nutrients less efficiently due to age or medication, or following a restricted diet may have needs that differ substantially from published DRIs.

The Daily Value (DV) percentages you see on food packaging are derived from DRI science but simplified into a single reference figure for labeling purposes. They're a useful at-a-glance tool but don't perfectly capture the variation between different population groups.
